Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is an Able and Talented student?

A: Able and talented students are those who may demonstrate outstanding potential in one or more areas and who perform at such a level as to warrant additional opportunities to further their development.

Q: Why do we need to identify Able and Talented students?

A: We aim to raise achievement and aspirations among all students. Able and Talented students may require extra support to help them achieve by:

  • Challenging and supporting the most able, gifted and talented to push the boundaries of what is possible;
  • Recognising and celebrating high achievement
  • Developing appropriate teaching and learning styles

Q. How can I make sure that my child is listed on the Able and Talented register?

A: When we receive a submission for the register we will contact you to let you know whether your child has been registered. You will also be notified in your child's report.   If you are in any doubt, please contact Miss McGregor, j.mcgregor@unity-college.com

Q: Is the Register fair?

A: The Able and Talented register is as fair as we can make it at Unity.  Any student can be nominated and any talent will be considered. It is, however, more difficult for us to identify gifted students who show a talent outside of school, which is why we depend on students and parents to make us aware of any talent which we may not have seen inside school. You can nominate a student using our online nomination form.

Q: Do the teachers know about Able and Talented?

A: All teachers at Unity College are made aware of,and receive training, on our Able and Talented provision.   Able and Talented students are taught in all subjects so any of our teachers may come across those students, and as such, we endeavour to ensure that the whole school is responsible for the Able and Talented provision.

Q: Do you discuss the Able and Talented register with students?

A: All students are told that we have an Able and Talented register, why we have the register and how we identify students who are able and talented.
