AQA : Art and Design (FullCourse)

Art and Design endorsed Textiles is avisual and creative subject which allows students to learn about the work ofcontemporary and historic artists and designers, relating their knowledge tothe development of their own skills as artists. Textiles (fabric and threads)is the medium through which students will draw, design, experiment andinvestigate in response to a theme, title or design brief.

They will work from directobservation and experience using a range of media. Students will learn to workto their own strengths and be able to identify areas for development throughoutthe duration of the course.

The course is designed to cover fourmain areas for critical, practical and theoretical study of art, craft anddesign. Students are awarded marks for:

  • Contextual understanding
  • Creative making
  • Reflective recording
  • Personal presentation

Students use a wide range of textiletechniques to create personal work using own original ideas. These are:

Fashionand Costume; Deconstruct/ Reconstruct,

EmbellishedTextiles; Embroidery, beading

Dyed textiles; batik, tie-dye, sprayed, direct painting, silk

Printed textiles ; block, transfer, lino, stencil

Constructed textiles; knitted, woven, stitched/embroidery (machineand hand)

The subject area encourages anexperimental approach, working with contemporary ideas, both 2D and 3D,producing outcomes for the body or the built environment including

  • Soft furnishings, book covers, decorative hangings, installations, sculptural and stand-alone forms, fashion and jewellery.
