Forty students from Aim Higher and Gifted and Able recently went to Hothersall Lodge where they took part in activities that were based on team work and meeting challenges.

Physical activities included designing and sailing a raft - a shockingly cold and wet experience; survival skills - a warm and welcoming event (especially for the midges!), building a shelter and a fire - then lighting it.  They then cooked fruit dishes such as chocolate bananas and stuffed apples - all swilled down with a cup of tea.

The high ropes proved to be a tall challenge with tree climbing, abseiling and climbing walls - which saw students successfully overcoming the fear factor.

The final and, some might say, scariest challenge was higher grade Maths and English - three whole hours of mathematical challenge based on real life experiences of students going to camp school.  Students had to look at costings, value for money, problem solving of tent allocation, waterproofing tents (surface area), grid reference and much more. The English challenge was to write a horror story full of suspence after studying a piece by Edgar Alan Poe.

The weather was great during the trip - it was sunny all the time!  The food was filling and the night entertainment by last years' Tom Ives was much appreciated.

A good time had by all!
